Thrift Style Thursday: Nautical Notions

When Brittany suggested a nautical theme for this week, I must admit, I was at a bit of a loss. I don't own anything with anchors on it, nothing with rope details or big gold buttons. So I started thinking a little more subtle approach was in order.

The style is typified by navy and white, sometimes with gold and/or red accents. That I can handle. Stripes are usually featured prominently, but polka dots will do in a pinch.

I added the one obviously beach-y item I own: my tiny starfish earrings made from real starfish! And finally, a pair of beloved Converse subbed in for boat shoes.

Refashion Runway Sew-Along: Floral and Geometric/Stripes

This weekend kicks off the third season of Refashion Runway, hosted by the Renegade Seamstress! The challenge this week was floral and geometric/stripes, which is a fantastic combination for those of us who are only beginning to dabble in pattern mixing. To see what the contestants came up with and vote for your favorite, go check out Beth's post.

Having had so much fun as a contestant two years ago, I thought it might be fun to sew along with the weekly themes for this season on my own, but with the added challenge of attempting to do so from my current, recently-scaled-back refashion stash, without buying anything new. The only striped thing I had on hand was this t-shirt, which I already refashioned once but never really wore as much as I thought I would. Luckily, I also had a floral dress that would coordinate beautifully. The bright, summery flowers and the bright, summery stripes seemed to cry out to be combined, am I right?

Thrift Style Thursday: Seeing Spots

I'm sure you'll be shocked, but the polka dot theme this week? Yeah, that was my idea. As you may have noticed, I've got a thing for polka dots.

And that ain't even the half of it!

I have a plan, you see. Soon, I will control the world's supply of polka dots...

Sunday Sew-Day: Beating the Heat

As August approaches, it's been getting hotter and hotter here (though not as bad a summer as it could be). Still, now is the time of year when I avoid the sun like a red-headed vampire. When I give serious thought to shaving my head. When I try to wear as little clothing as public decency allows. In pursuit of the latter, I decided to make over this XL dress from my heavier days.

My plan was to salvage the skirt portion and attach it to a new top. Enter this plain ol' Nautica tee I thrifted years ago and hardly ever wear.

Thrift Style Thursday: Summer Nights

Kristi asked us this week what we would wear to go out on a summer night, whether it's date night, girls night, or what have you.

Thrift Style Thursday: Summer Nights

I must confess, The Dude and I don't go out very often, and when we do, it's more likely a pub than a fancy little French place. So we keep it pretty casual.

And Girls Night usually consists of an evening at the local Starbucks with good friends and good yarn, knitting and chatting until the barista kicks us out at closing time, rather than partying at a club until the wee hours.
