Inspired by English paper pieced quilts, this blanket combines squares and diamonds in a playful, off-kilter grid. Knitters will enjoy the meditative garter stitch with simple increases and decreases, constructed in columns using a join-as-you-go technique. Crocheters can whip up stacks and stacks of center-out shapes in basic double and treble crochet to be quickly assembled a few at a time or all at once. Work one up in whatever size you need using any weight of yarn. Make yours a scrappy stash-buster or a precisely planned showpiece!
This pattern was designed in conjunction with the 2023 Fiberside Summer Yarn Crawl, a virtual event throughout July and August featuring tours of dozens of yarn shops across North America. Your purchase of a $10 All Access Pass to the crawl includes a code to download both the knit and crochet versions of this pattern for FREE! Visit FibersideChats.com for more details.

YARN
This pattern was designed to look good with any weight of yarn. If you’re worried you may not have enough of that weight in your stash, try holding multiple strands of a lighter yarn together to achieve the same weight. For example, by holding two strands of fingering weight yarn together to approximate DK, you can use up some of your sock yarn leftovers and your sweater leftovers at the same time!

COLORS
Whether you choose a small, curated palette or go wild and scrappy, your blanket is sure to dazzle! If you’re struggling with choice paralysis, here are few strategies I would recommend:

Focus on one side of the color wheel. Maybe grab all the blues and greens from your stash, or all the pinks and purples. Using a range of hues that have a common primary color can create a cohesive look, even in a scrappy project.

Stock up on neutrals for something a bit more subdued. If you get bored, you can always throw in a pop of neon for funsies!

Take inspiration from your favorite work of art. Give it a good stare, allowing your eyes to blur, and jot down what colors jump out at you first.

Use the diagram at the end of this pattern as a coloring page and have fun!

This pair of sister shawls each sport a striking sideways chevron design. These shawls were designed in collaboration with my newest local yarn shop, Knit Dallas, using their exclusive colorway "East Dallas" from Neighborhood Fiber Co. Each design takes 2 skeins of the Rustic Fingering base, but the shop also stocks the Studio Sock base if single ply isn't your thing.
The knit version, Jiggle, uses intermittent i-cord cast ons to gradually add more chevrons and build depth, followed by i-cord bind offs in the latter half to create that triangular shape. The crocheted Joggle shawl is formed in much the same way, using chains to sporadically extend the lower edge at first. Then, beyond the midpoint, blocks of stitches will be left unworked at the beginning of each decreasing section to bring the shawl back down to a point at the other end.
Large colorwork chevrons on the bottom half and small chevrons on the top meet in the middle to form a series of sweet little hearts that hug the neck. Two-color corrugated ribbing finishes off each edge. If either of these techniques is new to you, don't fret! The pattern includes links to video tutorials on my YouTube channel in case you need a helping hand.

It works up super fast too, using a full skein of Jems Luxe Fibers Monstrous bulky, paired with a set of 5 Monster bulky minis (or you can use two full skeins instead if you like).
This shawl begins at one tip and is worked side-to-side. German short-row wedges along the top edge of the shawl cause the direction of the knitting to shift from perfectly horizontal at first to ever increasing biased angles. I-cord edging and an i-cord bind off lend a smooth finish to the garter stitch fabric. This shawl was designed in collaboration with JuJu Knits in Fort Worth, Texas, using their shop exclusive colorway, Lady Bird, from MadelineTosh. Both the colorway and shawl were inspired by the former first lady, Lady Bird Johnson, and her Texas wildflower legacy.
This new 2-color, sock weight, triangular shawl pattern was a collaboration with Amy at West 7th Wool, using their Hunter's Sock base in Matcha Latte and Arsenic. The design features 4 size options, simple stripes, and an unusual (but easy) construction. Plain double knitting transitions effortlessly into basic brioche ribbing in this versatile, reversible hat design. How will you style yours? Light side or dark side? Slouchy or cuffed?

As the name may imply, this design was inspired by my own niece and nephews. It was born of a desire to cater to the whims of a fickle 5-year-old, a sullen 17-year-old, and all tastes in between. With 4 different ways to wear the same hat, everyone should be able to find a style that suits. Plus it’s sized for the entire family!
The original samples were made with Merinolux DK from Barker Wool (formerly Chasing Rabbits Fiber Co.) in the Austin and Empower colorways, but if purple's not your thing, I have it on good authority that Austin's vibrant streaks of color would also pair well with other tonal colorways, such as Velvet, Clara, Crabapple, Tiger Lily, Staghorn, Olivine, Indigo, Gentle...
NOTE ON COLOR CHOICES
Although you could make this pattern using two different colors, please be aware the color changes for the stripes happen on both right side and wrong side rows. Using two bases in the same colorway ensures those little dotted lines you get on the “wrong side” when striping are virtually invisible, making the shawl reversible. If you were to use two contrasting colors, the stripes on one side of the center diagonal would look like the RS and those on the other side of the center diagonal would look like the WS.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES
Video tutorial (link also included in pattern PDF)
Intarsia is a method of colorwork where each section of color has its own ball of yarn attached. The unused color is not strung across behind the work, but rather left hanging at the end of its color section to be picked up and used again on the next row.
This new 2-color, sock weight, triangular shawl pattern was a collaboration with Amy at West 7th Wool, using their Hunter's Sock base in Dorian and Shade Shifter. The design features 4 size options, garter stitch stripes, i-cord edging, and an unusual construction based on a variation on an afterthought/peasant heel adapted from sock knitting to shawl knitting! There's even an accompanying video tutorial on my YouTube channel for this technique.
This new 3-color, crescent shaped, fingering weight shawl design was a collaboration with Jems Luxe Fibers, using their Luxe Sock in Texas Wildflowers (variegated), The Primordials (speckled), and Pink Sapphire (solid). The pattern features three size options and a wide array of stitch patterns such as garter stripes, feather & fan ripples, simple brioche, German short rows, eyelets, and welts. And if you're not familiar with all of these techniques, don't worry! The pattern includes links to my YouTube tutorials too!
This new, deceptively simple shawl design combines 3 colors of fingering weight yarn and is worked entirely in garter stitch (no purling!). It features pinstripes, a uniquely asymmetrical edge, and 4 size options.
This design is a collaboration with Blue Mule Fiber, using their Fleck Ewe merino/silk base. Unfortunately, the Blue Mule dye crew has been forced to go on temporary hiatus recently, to devote more resources to the other side of their business (winery!). Luckily, there are still plenty of shops that stock their gorgeous yarns - McKinney Knittery, Yarnivore, Yarn Store Boutique, Skeins on Main, Blazing Star Ranch.
Introducing, by popular demand, a crocheted version of my Dissent Cowl! This pattern uses polka dots and post stitches and puffs (oh my!) to replicate the look of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s famous (& fabulous) collar, worn when she dissents from a Supreme Court decision. And like the knitted version, 20% of each sale goes to the ACLU for the life of the pattern!

Unlike your typical top-down shawl, which starts with only a few stitches and increases rapidly, this design begins with a long provisional cast-on that will form the center spine of the shawl, followed by relatively slow increases. Each u-shaped color stripe uses short-rows to build up more fabric on the sides than at the bottom, so the shawl gets wider much faster than it grows in height. After the final stripe, an i-cord bind-off around the entire shawl gives the edge a finished look.
A möbius is a loop with a half twist that means the surface only has one side. No right side or wrong side – just a continuous loop, which makes it a briocher’s best friend!
This new cowl design features Amanda Hope Yarn's Luxe DK, a scrumptious blend of merino and cashmere. Three skeins is enough for even the largest of the 5 size options offered in the pattern. And if DK isn't your thing, she has a Luxe Fingering base as well (you could totally use fingering weight for this pattern though your gauge/measurements would be different of course). This shawl is constructed in 6 nearly identical modular sections, forming an octagonal crescent. There are 5 sizes from shoulder warmer to generous wrap, each available in either a 3-color or 5-color version! Garter stitch paired with simple increases and decreases keeps it relaxing. A slip-stitch selvage edge makes picking up stitches easy, while an i-cord cast on, edgings, and bind offs smooth out the transitions between sections.
This design perfectly pairs a full 100g skein of fingering weight yarn with five 20g mini skeins, for instance Ewe2Yarn's Mellow along with one of her Mellow SWIRL mini sets. You could also use two full skeins if you want all your stripes to be the same color. It's all garter stitch with some super simple short-rows thrown in to create those asymmetrical, bottom-heavy stripes.
This shawl uses two matching gradients to create an optical illusion of one larger gradient that has been folded over in the middle. The pattern is written to make the most of any gradient yarn, regardless of its yardage. Choose two 50g gradients, typically intended for identical socks, or you can opt for two full 100g (or larger!) gradient cakes in the same colorway. You are also free to adjust the amount of the coordinating solid for even more flexibility in sizing. You can even work with a different weight of yarn if you like, but keep in mind this could impact the finished size of your shawl considerably.
This lacy little shawl was a collaboration with the lovely gents at Leading Men Fiber Arts using their Diva merino/silk blend.

Just as a stage whisper is intended to be heard, this light and airy shawl will speak volumes. Its curved bands of lace and garter stitch are a visual interpretation of sound waves carried out over an audience. This pattern features an unusual construction, large swaths of relaxing garter stitch, and an easily memorized lace pattern with both written and charted instructions provided.

I worked with Amanda of Lone Star Arts on both these designs, using her DFWFF show exclusive colorway along with a coordinating solid. A mixture of simple stitches and unusual construction gives the Perforation shawl the ideal balance of interest and mindlessness for that meditative knit you’ve been craving! The shawl is made with her Monarch Silver base, and while the photos hardly do it justice, the stellina sparkles in this sock weight yarn made this shawl such a fun knit!
The Misdirection cowl features her Armadillo base, which is a fantastic fingering weight yarn as well, if sparkles aren't your thing (though you could easily use either yarn with either pattern if you like). Two strands held together make this cowl super squishy and a cute quickie project to boot! The simple fade effect is achieved by swapping out one strand at a time for the second color.
This top-down, center-out shawl features columns of brioche that fan outward like feathers on a bird’s wing. This pattern is written to make the most of a gradient yarn, regardless of its yardage. Simply keep going until you are about to run out of yarn and make your wing as big as you like!
This project was a collaboration with Heather of Panorama Fiber Arts. Her Shade Shifting Gradients are so subtly smooth you won't even notice they've changed color on you. Plus, she offers custom dyed-to-order gradients in any yardage from 400 to 2000! So you could make a dainty dove wing shawlette or a ginormous dragon wing wrap if that's your thing.
Not only does the pattern include detailed instructions - both written and charted - for this bandana cowl, but there are also notes on some fabulous modification opportunities (mod-portunities?) as well! I've laid out steps to turn it into a shawl, scarf, loop, washcloth, or blanket, but those are just a jumping off point. I wanna see how far you guys can take this!
This playful crescent shawl was inspired by colorful strings of beads tossed to party-goers during Mardi Gras!

The stripes of “beads” within this shawl are a variation of a stitch pattern known as Blister, Coin, or Shaded Bobble Stitch. Two large short-row wedges lend the shawl its shape, as well as give the striped sections their differing angles to further the illusion of swagged beads. The whole thing is finished with a picot bind-off for that extra flourish!
I had the pleasure of collaborating with Robyn of TeenyButton Studio on this design, and I simply can't speak highly enough of her yarns! The Soft Sock base is super soft indeed (background color is Beignets), and the colors in her Mardi Gras Krewe mini skein set are truly divine! Look for her shop update later today!
I'm super proud of my latest pattern! This top-down, flared cowl was inspired by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s famous (and fabulous) collar, worn when she dissents from a decision by the Supreme Court. The upper section is a simple polka dot mosaic pattern, followed by a band of larger mosaic blocks. The lower section is separated into polka dots in the back with the bejeweled bib in the front. Increases are worked into the bib portion, so the jewels get larger as you work downward, which gives the cowl its flared shape.

Mosaic knitting is a form of colorwork where only one color is used on any given row. The stitches you want to be that color are either knitted or purled, while the stitches you want to be other color are simply slipped from needle to needle without being worked, while the working yarn is held in the back. It's one of the easiest forms of colorwork, basically just a step up from stripes, so don't let it scare you!
