Thrift Style Thursday: All About That Bass

This week's Thrift Style Thursday theme, courtesy of Brittany from Lipstick and Yarn, is All About That Bass, in which we showcase our favorite pair of thrifted pants. Umm, so... I kind of colored outside the lines on this one. You see, when I originally bought this skirt, it was, in fact, a pair of Tommy Hilfiger jeans I scored for just $5. I loved the intentional distressing and button-flap back pockets. Plus, they fit like a dream. So naturally, they quickly became my favorite pair.

As I continued to lose weight and the butt (of the pants, I mean) started to sag, I took them in. As the intentional distressing unintentionally progressed, I refashioned them into the perfect cut-off denim skirt. And just as the jeans had done before it, the skirt easily fell into the regular rotation and became a favorite again last spring and summer.

I took some risks with this outfit - things I never would have tried before joining the TST girls.
1. Skirts in winter - As it turns out, tights really can keep your legs fairly warm. Added bonus: no need to shave!
2. Black and brown - I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually really like the combo.
3. Mixing prints - We're taking it slow with just two prints at a time, but I'm getting more comfortable with the idea at least.
4. Purple and gold - I was afraid it might come off a little too... royal? But I think it totally works.
5. Mustard - While I hate mustard the condiment, I love mustard the color. Unfortunately, it doesn't love me back. I've always avoided wearing it because of my skin's yellow undertones. Too much makes me looks jaundiced, but apparently just a hint is just fine.

  1. Haha, as I was reading your list it totally reminded me of myself. I fell in love with black and brown last year after taking a chance and pairing them together - it was a good reminder that old school rules dont necessarily have a place in todays style world. Also, I LOVE mustard and I think it looks gorgeous on you! I may have also 'colored outside the lines' this week with my 'bass' choice haha, we're such rebels!

    1. That's what I'm learning - black with brown, mixing prints, white in the winter. It's crazy! Next thing you know, I might be wearing silver AND gold jewelry at the same time. Madness, I tell you!

  2. I totally agree with Miche!! I love all of the "risks" you've taken, they have totally payed off in this outfit - which you are rocking! - and they are all things I have thought before, too! That is just one of the many reasons I love TST, I definitely think it inspires each of us to push out of our fashion comfort zones and try new things! Great post, and I LOVE those detail shots!! ;)

    1. It's absolutely helping me be more conscious of what I wear and how each piece works with the others. Every week, I'm so excited for the next theme and thinking about what I want to wear for it. It's fantastic!

  3. This is the best kind of thrifted "bass"! Great refashion! Keep up with the colours and patterns, too. You nailed the theme this week. And, in line with Kristi and Miche, I think you've done a great job with risk-taking. I remember being there too. It's amazing how Thrift Style Thursday has allowed styles to mature and change. :)

    1. I feel like TST is going to help me come out of my fashion shell/rut/whatever you want to call it. Each new theme is just an opportunity to try something new!

  4. Love that this skirt is living such a long life in your wardrobe through all its transformations! So cute how you've styled it and way to go with mixing prints, wearing mustard (love the color as well, but can only wear in small doses too), and pushing your style boundaries a bit further :) Love this look on you!

    1. Thanks, Andrea! I think we all have those refashions that were incredibly successful and get re-worn a million times. And then of course, there are those that go straight back into the donate bin because they just didn't turn out right at all. Luckily, I think the former have outweighed the latter for me lately.

  6. Great job Carissa! I look forward to seeing what you wear each week. I wore brown boots with a black top yesterday, with jeans. I still haven't mixed prints! One new adventure at a time!

    1. And I really enjoy putting together a new outfit each week! It's definitely an fun challenge that gets me thinking about my clothes in all new ways. I didn't even realize I was in a fashion rut until I started dressing more thoughtfully.
