Thursday Thrift Score + The Red Herring Dress

Before I jump into the next series, I thought I might knock out a few refashions I've had in mind which don't really fit into any theme. So without further ado, I give you The Red Herring Dress.

I picked this up at last fall's clothes swap. It's 100% rayon in this vibrant, tie-dye-esque red and orange. It reminded me a lot of my fishy skirt, only in better condition with all its buttons still in place. So I grabbed it off the rack and, without even trying it on, took it home to make another maxi skirt. However, when I eventually tried it on, I noticed something odd. It fit. And it was really comfy. Sure, it didn't do much for my figure, but maybe this dress wasn't meant to be a skirt after all. I decided a quick snip was all it really needed. So I chopped off about a foot of fabric from the bottom.

I plucked off the bottom button.

And I re-hemmed and pressed the bottom edge.

Add my favorite new thrifted belt and my gold wedges, and we're all set for summer!

I'm apparently more well-endowed than the dress' manufacturer expected of the wearer, which gives the skirt a sort of high-low look. Not what I was going for but still totally cute!

And did I mention it's comfy? Oh so comfy.

Hey, look, shiny! I love the interesting clasp on this leather belt I scored for $3 at Goodwill.

And that beadwork? Fabulous!

  1. Cute! ----- the belt is really different and quite a crafty piece- I never would consider using the leather with a beaded piece, but it is perfect together.
    Happy Easter, Carissa

    1. The base of entire belt is leather too, not just the front clasp. It's a really hefty piece, seems sturdy enough that I'm not worried about losing beads immediately.
