Sunday Sew-Day: Live Long and Prosper

In memory of Leonard Nimoy, who passed away on Friday, I thought I would share with you a simple refashion I did a few months back but hadn't shared on the blog until now. I picked up this awesome, brand new t-shirt for a couple bucks at Goodwill, thinking my husband might wear it. Sadly, he doesn't like to broadcast his nerd-dom as loudly I do, and therefore, he never wore it. So I decided to confiscate it for myself and feminize it.

I grabbed another tee that fits me well and used it as a pattern to cut the body and sleeves down to size.

Then I stitched each sleeve to the body, with right sides together.

Finally I sewed the new side and underarm seams.

And that was that! A simple makeover in memory of the man who gave life to Mr. Spock.

I paired my new tee with black jeans and black leather boots, in keeping with the original Star Trek uniform, plus I added a black long-sleeved tee for an extra layer of warmth. (We got three whole inches of snow this week! It's craziness!) I also threw on some gold bangles to coordinate with the gold on the shirt.

I even wore my Star Trek insignia earrings (via Etsy, no longer available).

  1. Another great "cut-out" lesson - You make it appear to be so easily done ! Your whole outfit is really attractive !

    1. Thanks, Linda! I've done so many t-shirt re-fits by now, it actually does get easier!

    1. For the sleeves and side seams, I knew they wouldn't have to do much stretching, so I just used a straight stitch. If I had redone the bottom hem, collar, or something else that would need to stretch a bit, I would have used a zigzag.

  5. The refashion is wonderful, but now I'm sad. I hadn't heard until reading your post...we've all been sick at my house and mostly watching Phineas and Ferb.

I once saw a guy in a mall parking lot wearing a very nice Red Star Trek Jacket. I got all excited and threw my hand up as high as I could to throw him a "Live Long and Prosper"...he barely raised his own hand and gave me a little wave. We decided he either thought I was crazy or was shy and froze when a pretty girl geeked out over him. :o)

    1. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news :(

I saw a guy at the grocery store once in a jacket made to look like a Star Trek uniform. He was too far away for me to geek out on him though.

  6. I love this. I think it was a nice refashion homage to Nimoy. Better bet there's going to be an upcoming BBT episode this week in which Sheldon mourns. :)

    Great job, Carissa!
