Thrift Style Thursday: White-Out

This week's challenge, courtesy of Megan from Eclecticity, was Winter White-Out. Not surprisingly, Texas decided not to cooperate with the "winter" part. It was a brutal 60F/15C this afternoon. So in lieu of shooting in the snow, per Megan's request, we've got white rocks used for ballast around the train tracks downtown.

I found several lessons hidden in this little adventure. First off, all-white is not necessarily as unflattering as I expected it to be. Unfortunately, for someone as accident-prone as myself - and someone who has a mostly black dog with a proclivity for jumping up on people - I can't guarantee how long those white pants will stay white. They may find themselves in a dye-pot somewhere down the road, if I'm not careful.

I also discovered the only pair of white shoes I own are sandals. I'm not so cruel as to be that blatant about the mild weather, so I went with my pale pink Converse One Stars.

I learned that it is very difficult to photograph a pale person in all white clothing when there is even a single ray of direct sunlight. After two different sunny or partially sunny locations, I ended up on the shady side of an old warehouse.

I figured out what that little hook is for on the bottom of my tripod. It was incredibly windy today, and after a minor heart attack when my tripod blew over, I hung my purse on that little hook to prevent a second incident. Luckily, my camera only sustained minor damage - a couple little scrapes on the plastic casing. The lens, screen, and all other important bits are just fine.

Now how about you go see if any of the other ladies found a beautiful snowy backdrop for their Winter White-Out outfits?

  1. I worried a little about being so pale and doing an all white outfit too! You look great though - very fresh and spring like! Makes me long for actual spring! I love the shoes the most I think! So cute!

    1. Those shoes have seen a lot of use and have been through the wash on several occasions. I love 'em!

  2. Haha omg I had such a hard time with my photos and the sun as well! It was overcast, but the sun kept peeking out and blinding me, but I prevailed and shot just a little dark so my photos wouldn't be too blown out. I think you did a beautiful job with your photos and I LOVE the background you chose - very cool! The white capris are super cute and I can totally imagine you restyling those for spring!! Great post (and so happy the damage to your camera was minimal - sounds like you learned A LOT this week! ;))

    1. I know! I adjusted all the settings I could adjust (my camera's not that fancy), and still got bupkis. I do love the final photos and the background - it just wasn't what I had in my head when I set out that day.

  3. You literally have just described my biggest fear! I've never actually used the hook on the bottom of my tripod but I should probably have something with me in case of a windy day..glad to hear no major damage was done. Also, love your commitment to the theme - I slacked and added a few other colors in :/

    1. Yes, please, learn from my mistake. Always have something to weight your tripod if it's windy. I swear, it all happened in slow motion with me awkwardly running toward the camera as it fell over, screaming "Nooooooooo!!!!!"

  4. You totally hit the all-white nail on the head! Looks so fresh and like you say, it is totally flattering! Having a 6 year old (who doesn't shed but poses the same type of threat to my whites) I feel you on having to dye those pants in the future ;). Pretty look!

    1. Yep, of course the dog jumped on me as soon as I got home from my little photo shoot. Luckily, it was just dry dirt that brushed off fairly easily, but still, it's inevitable. I should probably start thinking now about what color I want to dye them...

HAHAHAHA thanks for this. I'm also glad to hear you didn't sustain any damages from the tripod incident. Good job on the white outfit! It's very cute on you. :)
