A Little Less Country...

Well, there's another two weeks since last we chatted. But what a whirlwind it's been! The Dude and I spent two hectic weeks busily painting in our new house before our scheduled move date, and we still didn't get it all done in time. The movers came and went, and now we've been living here for almost two more weeks, continuing to paint in the evenings and weekends, with a little unpacking interspersed here and there for variety. And then it happened. Two days ago, I finished painting the trim and china cabinet in the breakfast nook, and that was that. No more painting. At least for now.

All totaled, we primed and painted two bedrooms, the kitchen and breakfast nook, the formal dining room, and the entry/foyer. That also includes the kitchen cabinets and wainscoting in three of those rooms too. Wanna see?

Here are the before pictures of the kitchen from the real estate listing:

Blue walls and white-washed cabinetry may be pleasing to some, but it's certainly not our style. We were lucky though that the hard stuff had already been done - granite counters, tile backsplash, stainless appliances, etc. All that was left was a color change!

Now our kitchen is a little less country and a little more rock 'n roll.

(Do keep in mind we're still unpacking and organizing, so there's a lot of clutter on the counters right now.)

We started by removing the cabinet doors and drawers and lining them up in the garage. We taped and papered the floors and put drop cloths over the counters, and off we went! We primed the walls. We primed the cabinets. We primed the cabinet doors in the garage. We painted the walls. We painted the cabinets. We painted the cabinet doors. We waited a good long while (several days), to be sure it was all completely dry, before replacing the door and drawer hardware and reassembling everything.

I love our kitchen now. I take that back - the floors are just okay. I wasn't too keen on them before, but I think, now that the walls are neutral and the cabinets a solid color, the patterned floor is not quite so dizzying. It's certainly not what I would've chosen, but I don't hate it.

I think this is my favorite room in the house, in fact. It's so much easier to cook (by which I mean, help the Dude cook) in a kitchen you actually like spending time in. Imagine that!
