Snowflake Hat

This continues my tradition of knitting matching hats for all the children in my family (current count: 4) each winter. First, there were pointy Christmas tree hats with i-cord garland and button ornaments. The next year, it was snowman caps, plain white with carrot-shaped noses and button eyes and mini toboggan hats on top. This year, I decided to go a little less wacky since the kids are getting a little older now.

  3. i really like this pattern but I am struggling with this whole circular needle/dpns thing. Is it possible to do this pattern on straight needles?

    Cheers,
    Andrea

  4. Yeah, you could do it on straight needles. You would cast on two more stitches, and just work one even on each end. Then when you seam it up in the end, those two stitches would be hidden in the seam.

More explicitly, you would cast on 86 (98, 110, 122) sts. And on each row, you would k1, work the corresponding row of the chart 6 times, then k the last st.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  6. Beautiful hat...I've now knit five so far for my son and his cousins...so quick and easy!

However...I did have better results when I started using size 6 needles for the rib knit brim of the hat, then switched to size 7 for the remainder.

    Thanks again!

  7. When would I switch to dpns? Should 4 or 5 dpns be used? I am doing the adult small cap.

  8. You can switch to dpns whenever you start having to stretch out your stitches to go around the circular needle. Or if you use an extra long circular, you can employ the magic loop method and continue to use the circular throughout the hat.

  9. Oh, and it doesn't matter how many dpns you use. Some sets come with 4, 5 or even 6 needles, so however many you have/feel comfortable using.

  11. I am getting ready to decrease on the hat (child)....if I understand correctly there are only 6 decrease thru out the pattern????...I don't want to get to far and find that I am doing something wrong???? HELP! :)

  12. There will be 12 decreases every fourth round. Looking at the chart for the child size, you'll see the little 'carrots' (like an upside-down 'V' leaning to one side or the other). Each of those represents either a k2tog or a ssk, depending on the direction it's leaning (check out the chart key). So, starting with 96 sts, you'll decrease 12 sts on round 19 and every four round after that four more times (36 sts remaining). Then decrease 12 sts every other round twice (12 sts remaining). Then you'll cinch up those last 12 sts. Make sense?
