Some of you may remember this white denim jacket, which had some unfortunate stripey action going on until almost two years ago when I introduced it to a bucket of bleach. Sadly, and not surprisingly, I think the bleach probably weakened the fabric, and one fateful day, rrriiiiiippp went the side panel when I raised my arm. Not to worry! I've got a too-tight lace tee that'll fill in that hole nicely.
First, I snipped the damaged panel from the jacket, leaving about 1/4 inch of fabric around the edges, which I expect is going to fray nicely over time. I also removed the same panel from the other side of the jacket. Then I used the intact panel as a template to cut two symmetric pieces of lace.
I pinned each lace panel to the inside edges of the jacket holes, then stitched around on top of the existing stitches.
I toyed with the idea of replace all four back panels with lace, but I was afraid that would further compromise the jacket's structural integrity.
In all honesty, this was a quick-and-dirty refashion for a couple reasons.
Firstly, I think the frayed denim and lace are going to really compliment each other in a 90s/boho/grunge kind of way.
Also, if the bleached denim ripped once, I don't really expect this jacket to pass the test of time or anything, so whatever, right? I'll at least be able to enjoy it for a little longer.
How cute this look is - amazingly the lace goes well with the denim. I bet that is also is more comfortable with the ease the lace provides.
ReplyDeleteThat's definitely true - it is a bit stretchier with the lace instead of denim.
DeleteI have a special place in my heart for lace :) This is gorgeous. Nice save!
ReplyDeleteAs do I, Laura. Thanks!
DeleteThis is so lovely! I like the idea of symmetry. Would it work if you replace the pockets, or pocket flaps with a piece of lace? I'm not saying I'm going to buy a denim jacket to try this, but I won't rule it out, either ;-D
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing. Maybe I'll go back and add a bit of lace detailing on the front to tie it all together.
DeleteGreat fix! I like all the refashions using lace lately.
ReplyDeleteLace is friggin' awesome, isn't it? ;)
DeleteLove it! I am glad to have run into your website! Great ideas...and skill!
