Sunday Sew-Day: Denim, Part IX

As with the jeans-turned-skirt from two weeks ago, these guys had seen better days.

I thrifted them near the end of my weight loss and wore the crap out of them. Then I took them in a bit and kept wearing them. Somewhere along the way, they acquired stains on the tops of the thighs. I'm pretty sure these are a result of my bad habit of wiping my fingers on my pants after peeling my bananas. I love bananas, but their peel juice tends to turns things brown. Case in point:

Whilst surfing Pinterest the other day, I found this lovely ruffled denim skirt. Unfortunately, the original blog is not open to the public, so this one pic is all I had to go on.

Then it hit me. I had the perfect supplementary material to recreate this skirt. I've been holding on to the leftover skirt portion of this dress refashion for over a year now.

Breezy Tee Before & After

As with my last denim skirt, I first cut off the legs, just below the stains.

Similarly, I removed the inseam.

Once again, I picked out the front seam up to the zipper and the back seam to about the same height.

With my mini skirt inside-out, I pinned and sewed straight down to make my new center seams, just like last time.

And this is where we start to diverge from my previous denim skirt refashion. I laid the skirt flat and cut out a curvy bottom edge, removing the stained fabric in the process.

I inserted my ruffled skirt into my jeans and pinned it in place.

As I sewed, I made sure to move the pockets out of the way, so as not to sew them closed. Then I trimmed the white fabric about an inch above the curved stitches.

The excess fabric was folded under and secured with another line of stitching.

And here's how it looks from the outside.

Finally, I swapped my thread out for the traditional tan for jeans, and mimicked the welted seam down the back.

Finito!

Warning: This is not the type of skirt you should wear on a windy day. I can't tell you how many indecent pictures I had to delete from my camera. Luckily, my backyard is fairly private.

I made sure to keep the back denim long enough so I could still use my pockets. Pockets are very important to me.

I can't wait for the denim to fray some and really start to look awesome. I love the juxtaposition of soft and feminine with scruffy, cut-off jeans. In fact, if I had to characterize my style, I feel like that's as good a description as any!
